New Beginnings

The first meeting of 2012 for the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Women (PVUMW) took place early in January. It was a time to reflect on the year gone by and welcome with joy and anticipation the time ahead. A new slate of officers will lead the group in the coming months. We are pleased to announce that Cathy Baum has agreed to serve at President, Mary Lou Centofanti as Vice President, Tisha Tubman as Secretary, and Peggy Arnold as Treasurer. Sincere thanks are given to the retiring officers for their time and efforts over the past several years that they have served this unit of the United Methodist Women.

Plans are being discussed for our annual events, the Mother’s Day Tea and the Christmas Fair, and more details will be coming in the days ahead, including dates for your calendar.

The PVUMW is a vital and active group ministry of the church and all women are welcome to come to our meetings. Why not set aside time for yourself in this new year to come and share the joys of sisterhood in Christ. Our meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. We’d love to welcome you to our fellowship.

Annual Christmas Fair: December 3rd

The annual Christmas Fair, hosted by the United Methodist Women, will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. The ladies have spent their time over the past year making unique handcrafted items and lovely hand knit and crocheted items that will be for sale at reasonable prices. The Fair also hosts a Bake Sale section where many yummy homemade baked goods from our church family are donated, and a couple of rooms are dedicated to Attic Treasures where someone’s “junk” can be someone else’s treasure. Santa will be on hand to have pictures taken with children, and there will be a special Children’s Activity room where the kids can be entertained while their parents shop. At lunch time, plan to join with friends and enjoy a delicious selection of lunch items all prepared by our church ladies.

All the money raised by this annual fundraiser will be used to support the UMW mission projects within the community, and throughout the greater area and the world to help make a better life for the women and children in God’s great kingdom.

Why not come and share in the fun and begin  your Christmas shopping with us!

Bean Hole Bean Supper still enjoyed by many

Although the Bean Hole Bean Supper was ‘snowed out’, a few intrepid customers braved the snowy roads to come enjoy a meal. As the evening wore on and the snow continued to fall, most of the food was packed away for storage. And then the power went off! We were pleased that the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department took much of the remaining food to be used in the emergency shelter set up at the fire house. So while the evening didn’t go as planned, the food was enjoyed by many of the local community folks who stopped in to warm and refresh themselves at the fire house. We thank everyone who worked so hard to produce the supper food, and we are grateful that someone was able to use it during this stressful time.

The Beans Are Still Cookin’!

Despite the bad weather predictions, the Bean Hole Bean Supper will go on as scheduled. We hope that we’ll still have lots of hungry, hearty folks who will come out and enjoy a wonderful meal and our church’s hospitality. We’re also prepared for take-out meals! So plan to brave the weather and come have dinner with us!

Church Cancellation Notice: August 28, 2011

Due to the severe weather predictions, church services for Sunday, August 28th, 2011 have been cancelled. Everyone, please stay home and be safe until the storm passes by.  We’ll look forward to seeing you next Sunday, on September 4th.  As an additional reminder, there will be an Administrative Board meeting following the worship service on September 4th.  The topic for discussion will be the plan for replacing the furnace in the Parish House.

Third Annual Float Fest Scheduled

The Third Annual Float Fest will take place on Sunday, September 2nd beginning at 4 PM at Stanclift Cove, in Barkhamsted.  You’re invited to bring your kayak, canoe, or sailboat (no motors, please) and come and float awhile. We’ll gather together back on the beach at 6 PM to share a meal; each person brings their own food.  Don’t want to ‘float’? Come about 6PM and join the group for the meal and fellowship.

If you don’t have a beach sticker to the Cove, speak with Margo Fenn or John Baum so arrangements for a guest pass can be made. There will be no rain date; if the weather is poor, the event will be cancelled. For more information, contact the church office, or speak with Margo at 860-379-3874 or John at 860-379-9398.

Confirmation Class finale

This morning our church officially welcomed into full membership the four students in this years confirmation class. Erick, Chrissy, Leah, and Skylar have worked diligently all year studying about our Christian faith, and how they can continue on their faith journey with Jesus Christ.  We know they will do great things with their lives and will continue to build upon those lessons that began with dedicated parents, Sunday School teachers, pastors, and the entire church family.  May God add His richest blessings to your lives. Congratulations!!
