The annual Christmas Fair, hosted by the United Methodist Women’s group, will take place on Saturday, November 10th from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. Come and see the handiwork the ladies have created this year in the Craft Room, and the Knit/Crochet Room. Take some time to look over the offerings in the Christmas Attic Treasurers room, and the Bake Sale tables. This year the Youth Group is hosting a Kids Craft Room, and Santa will be available for photos as well. Plan your visit to allow you time for lunch in our Christmas Cafe and enjoy the homemade luncheon items that will be available. It’s the start of the holiday season, so we’d love you to start your activities and events, and shopping, with us!

Pumpkin Patch
Our church once again hosted a mini-Pumpkin Patch for the kindergarten and first grade classes at the Barkhamsted School. Each year we welcome the students as they walk across the playground for their visit. Once they arrive the children will enjoy several stories told by Miss Pat, and perhaps a song or game all related to pumpkins or harvest time. A healthy snack of pumpkin muffins, crackers and cheese, and apple juice is served. The muffins are a particular favorite. When it is time for the children to return to their classrooms they are allowed to pick a pumpkin from our patch to take home with them. We always enjoy these visits and know that the children have a good time too.
First Fall Bean Hole Bean Supper Coming Up
Looking for a reasonable meal for the whole family in a friendly atmosphere? The next Bean Hole Bean Supper at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church is this Saturday, September 22nd.
The famous Bean Hole Bean Suppers continue to be a long standing tradition at PVUMC. Started over 60 years ago, the suppers occur three times each year with one in the spring and two in the fall. Each supper offers three seating times, at 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, and 7:00 pm.
The meals are served ‘family style’ in the Fellowship Hall and Sunday School classrooms. The menu includes:
New England style baked beans served hot from the bean pot
Homemade cole slaw and potato salad
Fresh dinner rolls
“Dessert of the Day” homemade desserts. Each supper offers a different seasonal dessert selection; diabetic selections are also available.
Coffee/Tea/Lemonade
Reservations are recommended as the seatings fill up pretty quickly. If you would like to join them for a meal, please call 860-379-9398.
Rally Day Thank You to all the Teaching Staff
On Rally Day, Sunday, September 9th, Pastor Trudy welcomed and thanked on behalf of the entire congregation those people who so generously give of their time and talents to assist with the Christian education of our members. These people include not only the Sunday School teachers, but also the leaders of the various ministries such as the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, Lay Speaker, various Bible Studies, etc. As the fall season brings the beginning of Sunday School and other church activities, Pastor Trudy ensured that these people realized their actions are much appreciated by us all.
Welcome Reception for Pastor Trudy and Bob
A delightful afternoon reception was held on Sunday, September 9th to officially welcome Pastor Trudy and Bob Codd to our community and our church family. We were pleased that Rev. Charles Hall from First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted, and Rev. Barbara Schaffer from First United Methodist Church of Torrington were able to join us in our celebration. It was also a pleasure to see Barkhamsted’s First Selectman, Don Stein, among the guests.
We welcome visitors and/or those seeking a new church home to come join with us in worship on Sundays at 9:30 AM. There is Sunday School available for children from age 3 through 6th grade and Nursery care is available for the littlest of our children. Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month. Coffee Hour is a special time of fellowship and is available each Sunday after the worship service. It would be a blessing to us to see you there!

UMW Starts Another Season
Here we go again! After taking the summer months off to relax and refresh, the ladies of the United Methodist Women (UMW) at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church will enjoy their first meeting of the fall season on Wednesday, September 5th. Following our tradition, we’ll gather at 6:30 PM and enjoy a potluck supper, as we visit around the common table and catch up with everyone. Our business meeting will begin after the meal, and we’ll make the most of our time together to plan our fall activities, research ideas for future programs, finalize plans for our annual Christmas Fair, and remember in prayer those who are unable to be with us for one reason or another.
The UMW is open to all women of the church and we encourage you to come and get to know your sisters in Christ, learn about our activities and the ways in which we support many missions here at home and far away. It’s a time to start afresh with our hopes and dreams for our group, for our church as a whole, and for the world-wide fellowship of Christian women.
We hope to see lots of new faces on Wednesday!
Hey, Hey…It’s Rally Day!!
Wow! Where has the summer gone! Sunday, September 9th is Rally Day, which marks the beginning of the Sunday School year, as well as the start of the fall activities of the church. Sunday School is offered for children from pre-school to middle school age, and takes place during the normal worship service, at 9:30 AM on Sundays. Children will participate in the opening part of the worship service, and, following the Children’s Sermon, will then leave the Sanctuary to go to their respective classrooms. We have a dedicated and caring staff in our Sunday School who offer imaginative and interesting instruction in the Christian faith.
If you have any questions, or would like more information about our church school, please contact our Sunday School Superintendent, Mindy Henry, at 860-738-7737. For general questions about our church and the services, or other opportunities we offer, please call the church office, at 860-379-2157, when the office is open on Tuesdays from 11-5, and Fridays, from 2-4PM.
Welcome our new pastor!
This summer we welcomed Pastor Trudy and Bob Codd to our faith community. Pastor Trudy has been serving the Lord for most of her life, but as a pastor since 1992. She has served a number of churches, beginning at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in her hometown of Staten Island, NY, and most recently at the South Dover Windall Church and Burbank Church in Duchess, NY. Pastor Trudy is enthusiastic about her ministry here in Pleasant Valley, and is excited about moving forward with the “call to action” initiative which strives to bring life back into churches during these times of declining membership.
Pastor Trudy and Bob, between them, have 6 children and 10 grandchildren, with one more on the way! They are settling into their home in the church parsonage on Raymond Drive, along with their cat, and are happily getting acquainted with their neighbors, their church family, and their community as a whole.
We would like to invite everyone to attend a Welcome reception for Pastor Trudy and Bob on Sunday, September 9th beginning at 2:00 PM in Fellowship Hall at the church. Please come to meet your new neighbors and to spend some time getting to know them better.
Third Annual Float Fest Scheduled
The Third Annual Float Fest will take place on Sunday, September 2nd beginning at 4 PM at Stanclift Cove, in Barkhamsted. You’re invited to bring your kayak, canoe, or sailboat (no motors, please) and come and float awhile. We’ll gather together back on the beach at 6 PM to share a meal; each person brings their own food. Don’t want to ‘float’? Come about 6PM and join the group for the meal and fellowship.
If you don’t have a beach sticker to the Cove, speak with Margo Fenn or John Baum so arrangements for a guest pass can be made. There will be no rain date; if the weather is poor, the event will be cancelled. For more information, contact the church office, or speak with Margo at 860-379-3874 or John at 860-379-9398.
Ice Cream Social to benefit Imagine No Malaria
Did you know that every 60 seconds malaria claims the life of someone in Africa? This can be prevented by supporting the Imagine No Malaria initiative. This initiative’s plan is to help in four ways: Prevention by providing bed nets to families in the villages; Treatment by providing diagnostic access and medicine; Education by reaching out to the communities to teach people how to avoid malaria; and Communication by improving the methods of communication to tell the people about this life saving information. It includes improving radio stations, and providing hand-crank and solar powered radios to villages.
You can help by attending the Ice Cream Social hosted by Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 19th from 2-4 PM. This event is free and open to the public. We simply ask for a ‘good will donation’ which will be given to the conference to support the Imagine No Malaria program. Why not plan to come enjoy a nice cold treat, make a generous donation, and save a life.
