Book Collection Drive during September to benefit Read to Grow

read_to_growThe United Methodist Women (UMW) will be hosting a book drive during the month of September to benefit the Read to Grow program.

As described on their website, “Literacy begins at birth, long before the start of formal instruction in elementary school. By the time a child enters kindergarten, she or he already has been learning for 5 or 6 years. In fact, babies are born learning; parents are their first teachers and home is their first ‘school’.
Read to Grow
helps build literacy right from birth. They are the only statewide nonprofit organization that connects with parents in the hospital setting and prepares them to take an active role in their child’s literacy development from day one. To help parents create language-rich homes in which children can develop critical early skills, we provide books to families and to the programs that interact with infants, toddlers, and school-age children and their parents.” For more information about the Read to Grow program check out their website at www.readtogrow.org.

Throughout the month of September we’ll be collecting new and gently used children’s books. There will be a collection box here at church, at the Barkhamsted Town Hall, at the Barkhamsted Senior Center, and possibly the New Hartford Town Hall. We are hoping to get a few more collection sites before September and will let you know where they can be found.

Over the summer months, if you find some great books at tag sales, or garage sales, or if you’re simply cleaning out your children’s book collections, please remember to drop them off at the church, or any of the other collection sites. Books should be for infants and children through 8th grade and be in good condition, without torn pages or writing in them. Please — no magazines, textbooks, outdated nonfiction, encyclopedia sets or coloring books. For additional information, please speak with Margo Fenn.

Mother’s Day and Blanket Sunday is May 11th

Did you have a favorite blankie when you were growing up? Surely you remember the comfort that it brought to you. Mother’s Day is this Sunday. Why not make a donation in honor of your mother to Church World Service Blanket Sunday. The gift of a blanket to someone who has none can make a world of difference. To learn more, or make an on-line donation, go to www.cwsglobal.org and search for Blanket Sunday.

Mother’s Day Tea

To all the ladies of the church:

Come join us at the annual Mother’s Day Tea, hosted by the United Methodist Women, on Saturday, May 3rd from 2~4 PM.  We’ll gather in Fellowship Hall to celebrate the special ladies in our lives, to honor those who have already gone home to be with the Lord, and to have a wonderful time of fellowship all together.  We’ll enjoy tea and ‘goodies’, of course, as well as some games, a crafting project for the children, and an opportunity to have a family picture taken by our photographer.  This annual event is always a lot of fun, so plan to come join us for the afternoon!

Holy Week Services

With Palm Sunday rapidly approaching, let me share with you all the services and events at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.

Palm Sunday worship will be held at 9:30 AM, and will be marked with the Sunday School children passing out palms to the congregation. Sunday School will be held as usual during the worship service after the Children’s Sermon. Coffee Hour will be enjoyed in Fellowship Hall.

As Holy Week progresses, a Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7:00 PM. On Good Friday the Sanctuary will be open from noon until 3:30 PM and a prayer vigil will ensure that the Sanctuary is not empty during those hours when Jesus suffered on the cross. In addition, at 7:00 PM there will be a Good Friday worship service.

On Easter morning at 6:30 AM, we will meet in the Memorial Garden at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church to welcome the risen Christ and to send our songs of praise to our Heavenly Father. Following this short Sunrise service, a community breakfast will be hosted by the North Congregational Church in Fellowship Hall at PVUMC, a simple walk across the parking lot.

At 9:30 AM, the Easter worship service will take place; there will be no Sunday School for the children in order to allow the teachers and staff to attend the full worship hour. Coffee Hour will follow in Fellowship Hall. It will be a time for family and friends, as well as guests and visitors, to share a snack and fellowship.

It will be a busy place next week at PVUMC and all services are open to the public. We welcome guests and visitors to join with us as we share in the joy of the risen Lord.
